Immigration Scrapbook Project
During the 40 years from 1880 to 1920, “push” and “pull” factors combined to propel a huge wave of immigrants to the United States. Poverty, political violence, and religious persecution pushed millions out of their homelands to seek safety elsewhere. Others felt the pull of economic opportunities in the United States. *
Your task:
You are an immigrant living in the United States during the late 1880s. You have decided to create a scrapbook highlighting your journey and your experience upon arrival to the United States.
Your scrapbook must include:
1. a cover that includes a title and your name ____
2. an introductory page that provides background information about you and your family____
fictitious name, date of birth, age, native country
description of your family (parents, how many brothers and sisters do you have? did they all come with you?)
explanation of the events or circumstances that promoted you to immigrate (push/pull factors)
3. information about the journey to the United States ____
at least ONE written document that describes your journey to the United States (a letter/postcard to a family member back home, diary entry. . .)
at least TWO artifacts you used on your journey to the United States (passport, a ticket for the boat trip, coins from your home country . . .). Each artifact must have a caption explaining what the item is and how it was used.
at least TWO visuals that show something that happened on the journey to the United States (historical photograph . . .)
4. information about your experience upon arrival in the United States ____
at least ONE written document that describes your first experience to the United States (a letter/postcard to a family member back home, diary entry. . .)
at least TWO artifacts you used on your upon arrival to the United States (paycheck, page from an English dictionary . . .). Each artifact must have a caption explaining what the item is and how it was used.
at least TWO visuals that represent your new American life (historical photograph . . .)
5. map of the world showing your native country and your arrival point in the United States ____
